30 Wooden headrest
Ethiopia, Gurage or Arsi
First half of the twentieth century or later
This wooden headrest is slightly asymmetrical in form. The edges of the central flat support curve towards the top with three vertical rectangular openings reminiscent, perhaps, of a building. The surface is structured by horizontal and vertical incised decoration of parallel lines and of fishbone pattern. There is white pigment in the incisions; however, this is less visible on the front on account of the oil. There is also a dark brown patina on the base. Like many of the headrests in this case the platform is slanted towards the head of the user.
