26 Wooden headrest

Ethiopia, Sidamo
First half of the twentieth century or later

The block form of headrest is common throughout East Africa. On this example the base is slightly wider than the platform, which is covered with käbbe, a type of butter or ghee used by Ethiopian women in their hair treatment. The surface is decorated with a symmetrical fish-bone pattern, slightly raised on each side and worn; and one side has secondary cutting marks. Part of the block is raised with a piercing for the handle.
