24 Wooden headrest
Somalia
First half of the twentieth century or later
Compare the form of the previous headrest with this more recent example from Somalia. This headrest was carved from a single piece of wood and is incredibly light to hold. The surface underneath the platform and the base have incised irregular decoration consisting of grooves of zigzags and triangles. In places the decoration is sketched out but not completed. The surface is aged and worn and is partly still covered by a black coating, which is heavily scratched.
