18 Wooden headrest

This headrest has been dated to the Old Kingdom on account of the square abacus at the top of the central support; a form that more usually appears on stone headrests. An x-ray of this object reveals an unusual manufacturing technique. There are two crossed pins in the top forming a dove-tail dowel; this technique is more commonly found on the corners of Egyptian wooden coffins. Here it has been used to secure the central support and platform together.
