14 Stone headrest
Egypt
Old Kingdom (2707-2170 BC)
This calcite headrest is made in four separate pieces: a base, central support, abacus (square block), and platform. There are traces of patina and pigment on the surface. The headrest was part of the collection of Sir Robert Greg, who worked for the British government in Egypt, and later retired there. Upon his death in 1954, and in accordance with his will, 626 Egyptian antiquities were presented to the museum with the wish that they be displayed in order to encourage the teaching and appreciation of Egyptology in Cambridge.
