13 Stone headrest

Old Kingdom, Dynasty 6 (2347-2170 BC)

This calcite headrest is made in three separate parts. There is a clever design feature in that the centre of the base is raised to accommodate the lower part of the central support. This object was bought for the museum by William Mathew Flinders Petrie for 220 piastres in Egypt in 1899.

The Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, E.9.1899
