Description | Applied mounts decorated with (in ascending order): 1) lattice pattern, 2) Squirrel on vine, 3) Fan shape with pavilion and pagoda, 4) Scrolling with monster masks, 5) ruyi with scrolling. Pins in the form of prunus flowers. Stick: blond hardwood, with turned ivory. Applied mounts: (1-3) single piece of ivory carved and pierced. 5) Pressed horn. Centre stick: front' including mount (4), ivory, carved with traces of blue pigment; reverse: stripy grained hardwood. Pins: silver (tarnished). Rim: cane, covered in brown ochre fabric. Face: palm leaves, varnished (frayed and broken). Inscribed in ink in Chinese characters on the reverse: San ide er go chi (no. 2 of the three virtues). |
