Description | Double leaf of paper (or chicken skin?), both sides painted in bodycolour on a gold background; gold binding on upper edge. Sticks of ivory, pierced, painted and gilt on the front and pique with gold on the back. Sticks of ivory, pierced, painted and gilt on the front and pique with gold on the back. Guards of ivory, pierced, painted crimson and decorated with gold pique point. (18+2) Rivet with two mother-of-pearl washers. Front: A mounted Chinaman shooting with a bow and arrow at a bird, and standing Chinaman holding a hawk on his right wrist, accompanied by a hound; to the left there are rocks and flowering trees with a butterfly above, and to the right banana leaves, and a tree which curves over the heads of the figures. Reverse: A Chinaman waving a large sword at a butterfly. Sticks: Four cartouches decorated alternately with flowers on a plain ground and a Chinese figure reserved in a crimson ground, above, alternating lions and pigs, separated by plants with red flowers. Guards: Formal plant and geometric design in white, outlined in gold pique point and reserved in the crimson ground. |
