Slip-painted ware bowl

First half of the 13th century

Lent by the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, B/1996/1464

The decoration of this bowl consists of two concentric circles of large loops, with a small, partially-formed circle in the very centre. These patterns have been created by trailing a light-coloured slip on to the unglazed surface of the pot before its first firing. Three unglazed areas on the surface show where a small tripod was placed on it to keep it separate from the vessel during its second firing, after the glaze had been applied.
