Hare in a Larder

Conté pencil
Lent by the estate of John Craxton

Like his friend Lucian Freud, Craxton enjoyed drawing dead animals. They often stayed in Little Shelford, with the family of Joan Bayon, a girlfriend of Craxton’s eldest brother. He longed, however, to travel south, writing in April 1944 ‘I have been drawing dead birds and rabbits but I really want to go on a holiday to Sicily. The willow trees are nice & amazing here but I would prefer an olive tree growing out of a Greek ruin’.
