Oil on paper
Lent by the estate of John Craxton
Although supplies of materials were limited during the war, Craxton found that the London factory that had produced Ripolin household enamel paint (used by Picasso), although closed, still had sample tins of paint, which he acquired. He recalled: ‘We mixed tube colours with the Ripolin and they have retained a luminosity where other paintings of that period have not’; he appreciated the way that it ‘allowed the statement without the brush-strokes’.
