| Japan, Tensho era, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1582-1598), silver mon, 1587. During the Middle Ages gold and silver bullion in various forms had been used for payments. This silver coin and the first gold pieces (‘obans’) were issued by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in an attempt to rationalise the practice.
