frtiware coated in a white glaze painted in blue and in red lustre
fritware, mould made, glazed in white and painted in blue and in red lustre.
Shape: roughly square with slightly bevelled edges and decoration in relief
Upper surface: in a linear frieze on the upper edge and covering almost the remaining entire surface, floral sprays with pointed petals and leaves are reserved against a red lustre ground. Painted in blue and in relief, an inscription dominates the central section. On the lower edge a narrow band of dotted circles is reserved in lustre.

On the slip there is a note to say that Peter Morgan thinks this tile is genuine Close similarity with the V&A example (C.26-1983) could mean that these tiles are from the same building. Inscription on the V&A example is designed by the calligrapher Nusratuddin Muhammad for an unidentified building sponsored by the Timurid ruler Abu Sa`id (d.1469) see: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O85337/tile/ V&A example is thought to accompany a niche tile in the Metropolitan Museum of art (30.95.26) that is inscribed with: "Bismillah. Ordered the building of this structure the great sultan Abu Anbiyya, the conqueror sultan (Abu?) Sa'id Bahadur Khan, perpetual be his sovereignty. Nusrat al-Din Muhammad wrote this. Year 860 (1455-56 A.D.)".
