Description:
The Hyderabad Archaeological Society was founded in 1916 by Ghulam Yazdani, Epigraphist to the Government of India since 1911 and a man widely involved in the creation of learned societies in the British Raj. Instrumental in the foundation was the then-Resident of Hyderabad, Sir Alexander Fleetwood Pinhey, and one of the society's first actions was to establish a prize in his name, to be awarded trienially to scholars from any part of the world for "the best work on Deccan Archaeology or History". Sadly, as Pinhey died in early 1918 the prize had not been awarded before his death. The prize was awarded in the form of a medal, which the Society had designed by Allan Wyon. This is his workshop specimen, in bronze; the actual awards were made in gold.
