From the 1511 Latin edition of the Apocalypse with the letterpress text of chapter eighteen on the reverse. The image derives from the central episode in chapter twelve. In depicting Saint Michael's aerial battle, Dürer was influenced by Martin Schongauer's engraving of Saint Michael and also by his famous engraving of The Tribulations of Saint Anthony where the saint is beset by similar demons in mid-air. The posture of Saint Michael derives from the woodcut in the 1483 Koberger Bible.
