From the 1511 Latin edition of the Apocalypse with the letterpress text of chapters one and two on the reverse. This scene is not in the Book of Revelation; indeed it is arguable whether John who wrote the text was actually John the Evangelist. The story of how Saint John the Evangelist came to Rome and emerged unharmed when thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil in front of the Porta Latina is itself apocryphal, although the feast day was on the general calendar of the Roman church until 1960. The legend told in the Golden Legend was retold in Koberger's Passional oder der Heiligen Leben (Nuremberg, 1488). Dürer was influenced by the woodcut in the 1483 Koberger Bible (see photo) and possibly also by the 1485 Grüninger Bible. The depiction of the Emperor Domitian derives from Dürer's drawing of a Turk made in Venice, thus identifying the contemporary threat of Islam to Christendom with pagan Rome=s oppression of Christians.
