No.28 in the series Hyakunin isshu uba ga etoki (One hundred poems by one hundred poets as explained by a nurse). The poem is by Minamoto no Muneyuki (died 939), a grandson of emperor Kôkô: 'Winter loneliness in a mountain hamlet grows only deeper when guests are gone, and leaves and grass are withered - so runs my thought.' Hunters warm themselves at a fire. The warmth of their temporary blaze contrasts with the hut on the right, abandoned to the snow.
