Notes(s):
The sitter was an apothecary and collector of art, and one of Rembrandt's closest friends. This impression appears to be an intermediate state between state VII and VIII, with areas on the hat burnished so that it becomes visible, but with only a little of the burnishing around the frame of the triptych, which is much more extensive in state VIII.
