Notes:
Station no. 16 from the series Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi no uchi (Fifty-three stations of the Eastern coast road) of 1833-4. This poetic depiction of snowflakes falling on houses and hills already shrouded in a thick blanket of snow is one of the most famous in the set. In fact, it rarely snows at Kambara, and certainly not in August when Hiroshige made his journey along the Tôkaidô. Other elements also seem to be imaginary as they bear little relationship to the actual place. An alternative inking of this print also exists with the sky shaded dark at the top instead of at the horizon and with additional grey shading on the rooves and in front of the houses.
