From the series Shokoku meisho hyakkei (One hundred views of famous places in the Provinces) published by Uoya Eikichi in 1859-61. Hiroshige II first signed himself Shigenobu but took the name of his adopted father after the latter’s death in 1858. This series is his major achievement and this print is one of his masterpieces. It was probably based on a similar view of the bridge (although not a snow scene) in his master's Rokujûyoshi meisho zue (Pictures of famous places in the sixty-odd Provinces of 1853-6. The village in the foreground is Nishikimi. Kintaibashi means literally the bridge of the brocade sash.
