Notes:
Marlay cuttings Fl 6 – 8: Six cuttings from a Gradual. The elongated, compressed and spiky character of the script, the so-called horseshoe notation, and the design of the initials, with their recessed frames and combination of acanthus and fish-scale motifs, suggest an origin in Augsburg or Nuremberg during the second decade of the sixteenth century. The two images of St Bernard and the possible inclusion of the feast ‘In exaltatione sancte corone Domini’ (Marlay cutting Fl 8c) suggest that the initials belonged to a Cistercian Gradual. Two cuttings now in London, Wallace Collection, M.340 and M.341 may have come from the same manuscript.
