Notes:
Marlay cuttings Fl 1 – 4: Four leaves from a Gradual. These leaves are thought to have belonged to a Gradual made for Marcus Cruyt, ambassador of Emperor Charles V to Denmark and abbot of the Cistercian monastery of St Bernard’s at Hemiskem near Antwerp (1518 – 1536). The abbey’s chronicle records that Cruyt ordered the Gradual, together with three other manuscripts, around 1524 from the Louvain copyist Francis Weert. Other fragments from the Gradual survive in private collections in Germany and New York, and eight further leaves in Brussels (Bibl. Roy., MS II 3633: 1 – 8) contain Cruyt’s arms and motto Spes mea in domino. Two more leaves have been tentatively associated with Cruyt’s Gradual, Paris, Musée Marmottan, Wildenstein Collection, Inv. M 6322, and Cambridge, FM, MS 2-2006 (see the following entry). The illumination has been attributed to the circle of the Master of Cardinal Wolsey, a prominent artist in Antwerp in the 1520s. An associate of the Wolsey Master illuminated another of the four manuscripts known to have been commissioned by Marcus Cruyt in 1524 from Francis Weert, the Missal now in a private collection (Sotheby’s, London, 21 April 1998, lot 186; Los Angeles and London 2003 – 2004, no. 170).
