Notes:
This superbly printed example may be one of the unsigned impressions from the edition, but its provenance, from an heir of the printer, Roger Lacourière, suggests that it is one of the few (three or four) unsigned artist’s or printer’s proofs printed by Lacourière at the same time as the edition in 1939 (the edition of the Vollard Suite was not printed earlier because of the death of the publisher, Ambroise Vollard). (The documentation and cataloguing of Picasso’s prints is detailed and accurate enough to be sure that there are only the three or four recorded unsigned proofs like this outside the edition. The plate, cancelled in 1956, is in the Musée Picasso, Paris).
