Notes:
Geoffrey Grigson has connected this draiwng, along with the one of "A Country Road leading towards a Church', now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, with 'The Magic Apple Tree', (No. 1490). However, the point must not be overstressed; the main drawing on the sheet is a faithful representation of a bough bearing apples, which does not reappear in the composition of 'The Magic Apple Tree'. It shows Palmer following Linnell's advice to copy nature more closely than he does in either of the other two drawings. Only in the very slight sketches of clusters of apples to the left of the page is there a suggestion of the central group of laden boughs in the 'Magic Apple Tree'. For further notes, see under No. 1490.
