Handlists from Exhibitions

Rembrandt’s Christmas Rembrandt & Saskia is the latest in a series of thematic exhibitions allied to a conservation programme of the Fitzwilliam Museum’s outstanding collection of Rembrandt prints. Previous exhibitions dealt with Rembrandt’s prints of landscapes, nudes, and subjects connected with Christmas and Christ's Passion. You can download from this page the handlist for the current exhibition and also for the previous exhibitions: Rembrandt and the nude (1996), Rembrandt and the Passion (1999), Rembrandt’s Christmas (2005). In the handlists you will find discussion of Rembrandt's approach to each theme, and detailed information about each of the prints in the exhibitions.

The conservation programme involves the removal of the prints from the mounts that they were given in the nineteenth century, when they were taken out of albums. This allows a study of the paper that contributes to an understanding of the circumstances in which Rembrandt’s plates were printed. A fuller analysis with x-radiography awaits the eventual conservation of the entire Rembrandt collection, but in the meantime, these handlists reveal what has been found so far.
