We have a termly programme of half day Inset courses and also offer tailor-made courses. We also work with ITE providers and trainee teachers.
Tailor Made INSET Courses
We are currently planning an exciting new INSET programme for 2014-15 to co-incide with the implementation of the New National Curriculum. We offer half and full day tailor made INSET courses to all schools. We can look at specific subject areas such as literacy or history or explore how objects can be a starting point for cross-curricular teaching. There is normally a charge for these courses.
We work closely our local ITE providers and regulary teach groups of trainee teachers in the museum. For more information contact Kate Noble on 01223 761678 or email email@example.com
Early Years and Primary
Each year students on the Early Years and Primary PGCE course at the Faculty of Education take part in a museum education day which explores the potential of museums for teaching and learning. For many students this day has been inspirational:
"I think more of the course (Primary PGCE) should be structured around 'learning environments' and learning outside the classroom because it completely changes how you approach the curriculum and gives great confidence to apply cross-curricular themes in the classroom. The approach to objects, the use of questions for enquiry, letting the children lead the discovery and the way that small things can turn into longer-term projects is really valuable. I will seek to change my classroom environment and take advantage of any opportunities to go to museums".
We work with Secondary trainees running sessions on using museums to teach English, Religious Studies and History, as well as with student teachers on a Graduate Trainee Programmes.

Each year we offer a limited number of museum placements to trainee teachers. Trained mentors in the education department are able to support students during these placements.
In 2008-9 the museum took part in a TDA (Teacher Development Agency) funded placement project for trainee teachers. For more information about this project visit
