Visiting Scholars: Coins and Medals

Robinson Visiting Fellowships and Studentships

Through the generosity of the E S G Robinson Charitable Trust, established by Sir Edward Robinson (1887-1976), the Fitzwilliam Museum and Wolfson College are able to award one Visiting Fellowship and one Visiting Studentship annually. The recipients will be nominated by the Keeper of Coins and Medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum. The Visiting Fellowship is intended to enable an established scholar in numismatics to stay in Cambridge for a minimum of four weeks, and the Visiting Studentship is intended to enable a younger numismatist who is establishing him or herself in an academic career to stay for a minimum of eight weeks. Visiting Fellows and Students will work mainly in the Fitzwilliam's Coin Room with its superb collection and library, and will also have access to the main University Library and Departmental libraries, and be able to travel to see collections and colleagues elsewhere in Britain.

The Students and Fellows will be members of Wolfson College, with the privileges of dining rights, membership of the Combination Room and use of the College Library and Computing Rooms. The College will offer accommodation, including access to a kitchen. Meals may also be taken in Hall, which runs on a self-service basis except for one night a week when there is a formal Hall dinner. Wolfson is one of the University's younger colleges, founded in 1965 mainly for graduate students. It always has a number of visiting scholars who mix freely with students and fellows, and its relaxed and international atmosphere makes it an enjoyable and stimulating base for a period of study.

The Robinson Fellow was paid their travel expenses to Cambridge and provided with four weeks' accommodation in College and £300 towards meals and other expenses. (The Fellow may stay longer at his or her own expense, and it is also possible to bring his or her spouse, although accommodation for couples in College is limited.)

The Robinson Student was awarded a grant of £1750 to cover travel expenses to Cambridge, accommodation and maintenance.
