Silver-gilt penannular brooch, 13th cent., made from a scarce coin of King John (1199-1216), short cross penny, Rhuddlan mint, moneyer Simond (Brand class iiic, dies 3350), c.1205-10; 1.04g.
This is an unusual piece, with no known close parallels. The centre of the coin has been cut out leaving only a circular band with the legends. It has subsequently been gilded (including both the outside and inside edges) and pierced to carry a pin (now missing).
Given by Philip Mernick, 1999.
