English medieval jeton, c.1280, groat-sized piece with facing mitred bust, produced from an official face punch for groats of Edward I (unpublished), copper alloy, 25mm, 3.46g. Found in Ely, 3 October 2001.
This is a significant discovery, marking the earliest phase of jeton production in England. The use of the groat punch for jetons is previously unrecorded.
