It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr Mark Blackburn (1953-2011), Keeper of Coins and Medals in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Reader in Numismatics and Monetary History in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He died peacefully at home on 1 September after a long struggle against cancer.

Dr Mark Blackburn - Awarded D.Litt and the Derek Allen Prize
Dr Mark Blackburn, the Keeper of Coins and Medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum since 1991, who is widely recognised as one of the greatest scholars in numismatics today, has recently won two prestigious awards.

Philip Grierson, medieval historian and numismatist, benefactor and the Fitzwilliam Museum’s
Honorary Keeper of Coins since 1949, died on 15 January 2006, aged 95.
