With its rich collections and library, the Department is a centre for research and teaching in numismatics.

A new virtual exhibition
Only twenty-three New Zealand Crosses were awarded, and still fewer are known today. Investigating the history of the Museum's example, which was awarded to Antonio Rodriquez of the Taranaki Mounted Volunteers, led not only to a surprising amount of material on the man and his subsequent life, but also to the mutual discovery of three branches of his descendants.
