The collections of the Department of Antiquities offer vivid glimpses of many aspects of ancient life, from funerary
beliefs and customs to technology, sport, writing or the role of women.
The objects range from stone and wooden coffins to seal-stones, from painted pottery to marble portraits, from gold and silver jewellery, copper-alloy figurines, woollen tunics and furnishing fabrics to papyrus, cuneiform tablets and ivory inlays. The collections have grown gradually as the result of excavations, gifts, bequests and purchases between 1818 and the present day.
