Gifts to the Gods in Greece and Rome

Dedication practices changed little in the centuries spanned by the Greek and Roman civilisations, as sanctuary visitors gave objects in thanks or in hope of a god's favour. These pieces actually come from a number of sanctuaries dedicated to various gods and heroes and cover a wide time-period, but together they give an impression of the types of offerings that might be seen at sanctuaries to minor gods throughout the Greek and Roman world. Votive reliefs, many showing sacred heroes or gods attended by worshippers, would be crowded together on sanctuary walls, while small figurines representing gods and altars to them would be set up around the sanctuary.
