Honours for Cassander

This Greek inscription lists gold laurel wreaths and other honours awarded to Cassander of Alexandria Troas by numerous Greek cities. Sculpted wreaths punctuate the written records of awards. Cassander probably earned his honours by negotiating favourable political arrangements for the cities named here, most of which are in mainland Greece. This advertisement of Cassander’s diplomatic skills was displayed in the sanctuary of his home town, on the north-west coast of modern-day Turkey. The network of contacts it reveals reflects the political conditions of the Greek world after Alexander the Great.
