Portrait Heads: Who's Who
Some of these heads were originally attached to full-length figures. Isolated heads cannot always be identified, but sometimes a head may match one on a similar, but more completely preserved, statue. Occasionally inscriptions are found that name the character portrayed.
Most of these heads are actually Roman versions of Greek sculpture of the fifth and fourth centuries BC. The later sculptors were often skilful and creative adapters: they might combine elements of several figures, or give new meaning to a traditional work.
