Museum Registrar

Salary range: £33,230 - £44,607

The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge. It has internationally important collections organised in five curatorial departments and provides education and information services for a variety of audiences. All of its collections were designated in 1997 as being of outstanding national and international importance.

The overall purpose of this post is the management of all aspects of registration relating to acquisitions for the collections and loans of works of art to and from the Museum. This includes dealing with all aspects of transport, insurance, government indemnity, loan contracts, arrangements for couriers, making provision for lenders’ requirements and ensuring that the Museum’s requirements are met by borrowers of Museum objects. Object registration is critical to the Museum’s Accredited and Designated status, on which much of the Museum’s core and project funding depends as well as that of Government Indemnity status. It is a complex area of work which carries a great deal of the Museum’s reputational risks.

The successful candidate will work with curators, conservators, technicians and other colleagues across the Museum as well as externally. S/he will have a demonstrable, current track record in museum registration, including working with loans and acquisition procedures and management systems.

S/he would be willing to take responsibility, act as a point of reference to both external and internal requirements and work well in a team, supporting colleagues. S/he would have experience of management of staff, good communication skills, excellent organisational and planning abilities that have preferably been developed within a museum setting.
