Children & Young People Widening Participation Officer

University of Cambridge Museums (UCM) is one of only 16 museum services nationally to secure Major Partnership Funding from the Arts Council England (ACE). The Connecting Collections programme (CC) will transform access to the exceptional collections and research resources of the eight University of Cambridge Museums (UCM). Excellence in collections care and interpretation, substantial digital innovation, high-profile exhibitions, imaginative learning programmes and effective marketing across the University museums and with wider cultural partners will reach and benefit audiences locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

This is a full time position, based within the Education Department of the Fitzwilliam Museum, but working across the 8 University of Cambridge Museums.

The role is equally funded by the Arts Council England’s Major Partner Museum programme, and Cambridge University’s Widening Participation Project Fund until March 2015.

The successful candidate will support learning staff across the UCM to work together to deliver inspiring, cross-thematic school programmes, targeting children and young people. These programmes also need to address the Widening Participation targets groups and schools that have been identified with the Cambridge University Admissions Office e.g. Children in care, Schools with a higher than average take up of free school meals and lower than average academic performance within the Eastern region.

You will be an experienced museum/community education professional, with a first degree in a subject relevant to the Museums’ Collections and who has knowledge and understanding of learning from objects. You will have knowledge and understanding of how museums can support school learning, experience of planning, organising, delivering and evaluating education programmes in a museum/gallery environment.

With excellent inter-personal and communication skills with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, cultures and abilities, you will possess the desire, drive and energy to work effectively with a broad spectrum of the community, coupled with imagination and empathy.

Other essential requirements include IT literacy, time management, administrative skills and practical experience of statutory legislation related to the needs of the role. There will also be some unsocial hours working.

Offers of employment will be conditional upon the satisfactory outcome of an enhanced CRB check. Whether an outcome is satisfactory will be determined by the University.
