Assistant Keeper (Medieval and Modern), Department of Coins and Medals
The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge. It has internationally important collections organised in five curatorial departments and provides education and information services for a variety of audiences. All of its collections were designated in 1997 as being of outstanding importance
The Department of Coins and Medals embraces money in many different forms from all parts of the world and spanning ancient to modern times, as well as medals since their origin in the Renaissance. With its rich collections and library, the Department is an international centre for research and teaching in numismatics.
The Assistant Keeper, Coins and Medals is responsible for the care of the Medieval and Modern collections, assists in curatorial duties including the care of the Collections, preparing exhibitions, facilitating access, supporting research and teaching and the wider dissemination of the numismatic collections and library.
The successful candidate is likely to have a degree in Medieval or Modern history or other relevant field and may have completed a PhD on a numismatic topic, have a record of publications in this field, experience of working in a museum environment and preparing exhibitions, as well as active research interests. A working knowledge of Classical and some foreign languages is desirable. S/he would be willing to take responsibility, act as a point of reference to both external and internal requirements and work well in a team, supporting colleagues. S/he would have good communication skills, interested in exhibition display and have clear handwriting for labelling coin tickets. Evidence of both quality of research and publication and of personal and practical skills are key factors.
